Gregor and us actually have a lot in common. As one person, who was I ten years ago? Five years ago? One year ago? Have we changed? And then as a society, how were we a hundred years ago? Twenty years ago? Have we changed since then? The difference between Gregor and the rest of us is less about Gregor's bugness, and more about how his change took place. In one evening, Gregor was something completely different with no stops in between. We as humans, on the other hand, change but ordinarily not this abruptly. If we look at ourselves a year ago, we may discover that we were quite different, and that we thought quite different thoughts and held quite different viewpoints from those we hold now.
However, the work also points to something else we should take into consideration. We may feel like Gregor, but how many times do we stop to think that perhaps we're Gregor's family? We may feel alienated or cut off by change, but how often are we the ones who commit the alienation or cutting off because someone else changes?
3. Groups - work on your notes, your characterization (look closely at the diction or words used) and discuss the following question within your groups: Which aspects of Gregor's life can be attributed to his human side? To his animal side? How does the story distinguish between human and animal actions? Or is there really no difference between the two?
HW: Read Chapter 2 completely by tomorrow's class; continue your characterizations of Gregor and your group focus
