Here is what we covered in class on Friday:
Beginning quotes only have power if they play a central role in the context of the essay. The quote that doesn't contribute strong meaning to your essay will have a powerful negative effect.
For example:
In advocating nationalistic pride, selflessness and volunteerism, former President John F. Kennedy famously proclaimed, "...ask not what your country can do for you; as what you can do for your country."
As opposed to:
"...Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." This famous quote by John F. Kennedy advocates a sense of nationalistic pride, selflessness, and volunteerism.
By embedding the quote, you get your paper going immediately.
Short quotes are placed in quotation marks. Long quotes are not given quotation marks. The are indented and single spaced - setting them apart.
In both cases for research papers or critical analysis, citation information (author, page number) are placed in parentheses at the end of the quote and after the final quotation mark.
